Proposal Passed by CA Committee Allows Govt to Seize Land Above Ceiling

NHRN
Kathmandu, September 18:
The Constituent Assembly's Committee on Distribution of Natural Resources, Financial Rights and Public Revenue Friday endorsed a proposal on land reform, which allows the government to confiscate land exceeding the ceiling fixed by it.
The committee, which is chaired by Maoist lawmaker Amrita Thapa, put the proposal to vote after the parties represented in the committee failed to reach a common position. The proposal floated brought up by the Maoists garnered majority.
As per the proposal, the government can confiscate land exceeding the ceiling without compensation.
Nepali Congress, CPN (UML) and the Madhesi parties opposed the proposal saying there should be clear provision for compensation to those losing their land under this provision.
However, following complaints that the proposal was passed despite the absence of some lawmakers, the opponents have been allowed to register their views on the proposal by Sunday.
